B12 helps maintain healthy nerve cells and red blood cells and is also needed to make DNA, the genetic material in all cells. B12 combines with a substance called intrinsic factor (IF) before it is absorbed into the bloodstream. An inability to absorb vitamin B12 from the intestinal tract is increasingly common among the elderly. Strict vegetarians or vegans who are not taking in proper amounts of B12 are also prone to deficiency. Vitamin B12 is used to manage B12 deficiency states,including megaloblastic anemia.Studies have also shown that a deficiency of vitamin B12 can lead to abnormal neurologic and psychiatric symptoms.Supplementation with B12 has shown benefit in reversing impaired mental function in the elderly with low levels of vitamin B12. Brain B-12 contains only the methylcobalamin form of B12 known as the coenzyme form.Methylcobalamin is considered an enhanced form of B12 and is the same form found in natural food supplies.It is believed to be a much more active and bioavailable form of this vitamin. Other forms of vitamin B12 require a methyl donor in order to be converted into a biologically active form in the blood.
Adult Dosage:Take one lozenge daily. Chew lozenge or hold in mouth until dissolved.
